Spotted Eagle - Leader of the Sans Arc Sioux

31 August 2018

Spotted Eagle or “Wanbli Gleska” was leader of the Sans Arc Sioux. The Sans Arc or “Itazipcho” means “those who hunt without bows”.

Sans Arc is the French for "without bows”. They are a tribe of the Lakota people sometime called the Central Lakota.

We know the Sans Arcs were camped near to the Miniconjou at the top of the village in the bends in the Little Big Horn river.

At the battle of the Greasy Grass we do know they were involved at the Reno-Benteen battlefield both North and South of Reno Hill.

Casualties recorded show that a Sans Arc Lakota Sioux warrior, “Cankuhanska” or Long Road, was killed on June 26, 1876. He was charging a position held by the 7th cavalry. It was said that he was shot while trying to “count coup on the soldiers in a trench.”

The Sans Arcs were also very active on the around the eastern side of the Little Big Horn river.

Spotted Eagles Warriors are now based and we are showing them as both Foot and Mounted mixed on the base together, in this way we are attempting to show how the warriors fought.
