Wars of the Roses troops are now based

30 March 2021

After a long break over Christmas and focusing on my History module, the Blore Heath WOTR project needed addressing so I took out the figures. Having got the figures ready for basing the last time I looked at them, I began to get straight into actually basing them.

It’s my first foray into 10mm figures for many a year and to be honest it's daunting - they are so different from my favourite 6mm troops. More details and more areas to paint. So for these guys I decided on basing them and then spraying them with a base coat.

As you may know, I like to paint the figures once based as I have the view that if you can’t see it, don’t paint it. I know some will complain that this is painting heresy, but it works for me.

Here are the CinC’s and Commanders. Three figures representing the Earl of Salisbury and Lord Audley, The Two figures on the base representing Stanley and Lord Dudley.

I based the Mounted Men at Arms as a barded horse base and Mounted Men at Arms on horses without barding on the other base.

The lighter armoured cavalry that supports the mounted men at arms and chase down fugitives.

These are Hobilars/Currors bases:

My approach to differentiate the Dismounted Men at Arms bases was simply to base one with axes to the front, the other with swords to the front.

The Billmen will fight alongside the Men at Arms with their archers in support. We have four bases of these two Retinue and two Shire Levy bases.

These are the Retinue Billmen bases:

The Archers are come in the form of four bases of Longbowmen.

Finally, here is the gun and its crew along with its ordinance wagon. These have been glued, built and based. The gun is on a 30x30mm base and I have used a 60x30mm base for the ordinance.

I have also sourced some buildings and fortifications, but that’s for another day. On to the base coating. . .
