Painting the Wars of the Roses (WOTR) troops

07 April 2021

I am making great progress here. As you may know, I come from the "base them first and then paint them" school of heretical figure painting. So I began by basing them first before spraying them all brown.

I like brown horses and I can deal with the odd ones that are not brown individually. So here they all are, a uniform shade of brown.I also tend to apply a black wash to all my figures too. This washing helps with my failing eyesight to highlight what I need to paint. You can see this in practice here as the details are picked out ready to be painted.

Rather than go through the process of how I paint each base, I will just show you the finished figures and describe the process I used.

Here are the CinC’s (three figures per base) and the Commanders (two figures per base). I used Citadels Leadbelcher as the base for the armour as it’s a bit darker than silver and the process of painting them is easier. I then painted in the details around the armour and finally did the base and the flocking. This was all finished with Per’s Windsor and Newton Nut Brown wash.

I then started to work on the Dismounted Men at Arms for each of the CinC’s. Using the same basic process as I applied to the Leader bases above. I began by blocking in the armour for the two bases and did the usual blackwash for highlighting the details - this included the bases, flock and the flags. I finally finished with Windsor and Newton's Nut Brown wash.

Finally, a change of pace so that I can paint some non-armoured soldiery. I blocked in the basic steel (Leadbelcher) around the wheels, bolts and barrel on the cannon. Again I finished off these with the old Windsor and Newton's Nut Brown wash.
