American Civil War, Part 5 - The Artillery, Easy Peasy

24 May 2022

I decided to go with the regulations and by the way the parks services seem to favour the regs, whereas some wargamers seem to prefer wood, gunmetal and bronze for their equipment.

So, it's Olive drab wood and black barrels on the ironwork for the union and confederate guns, with some bronze or Verdigris, coloured barrels for some of the older or newer rifled guns. I thought I might start by blocking in the artillery figures before I begin with the guns and limbers over the base undercoat shown here, I use this undercoat so it’s easier to paint the horses. This also gives me a good foundation to paint on, gives us a good start in the basic horse colours as well as not showing through on some of the thinner colours like the light blue trousers.

These are the raw undercoated bases that we are going to begin with, and will hopefully paint up well over the coming weeks.

You might have noticed my deliberate mistake in the first pictures, anyway I have corrected this and put the right guns with the correct limbers now as you can see below. I have also block painted in the Jackets and Trousers for the figures.

These are also the correct Union Artillery Limber and Gun bases

We have now added the olive drab to wooden parts of the Gun and Limber. After which we have put on the black painted iron work. This was the same for both Union and Confederate sides.

With the bases still looking a bit on the “at the rough stage” side of the process, we seem to be progressing well. In ACW part 6 - The Artillery. I will be moving on to the washing and detailing phases of the painting process.
