Thureophoroi. If you can say it, you can have them...

The Thureophoroi were Hellenic (Greek) infantry that were meant to support phalanxes and provide a link between Phalangites (Pikes) and the Peltasts (Lights).

This meant they were able to skirmish, fight in melees and provide a mobile force that could hit an enemy with heavy javelins and then rush in to flank pike or larger units. Multi-taskers indeed, if very difficult to pronounce in English.

These troops have bronze helmets, linen tunics and a thureos shield. They are also armed with heavy javelins and a spear.

Once I had painted and based these multi tasking troops, collection calculator gives me a value of £14.00 for both bases.

What shall we do now? Skirmish or Fight?

As with the Triarii I paid more attention to the overall look of the bases using the experience I gained getting in between figures with the brushes I had. I tried to vary the look on these figures to give a less uniform presentation on the field of battle.

I couldn’t use the "factory" approach and paint the figures all in one go as the look I wanted wasn't like the Triarii process with lots of block colours. However, at the end of the day I think the approach I took worked well.
