Oh, oh! Here we go again

14 January 2019

After admitting to my wife that I had put in a bid on some figures on eBay that I fancied, she said: “Well, you’ll be outbid for those. You always are, so no worries”.

“You don’t understand,” I said. “I put a bid in and I won, so they are coming on Friday.”

She sighed. “Don’t you have enough to do?”

Well I do have:

  • My 6mm Little Bighorn Battle participation game to finish
  • My 15mm DBA figures to finish
  • My 15mm “What a Tanker” project to finish
  • And now I have a 10mm DBA project. Hooray!

Jane wouldn’t let up. “That’s all without counting your full-time job, your family to look after and that wargamer thingy website to look after as well!”

Now, hold on a minute. “I think I am like every other Wargamer I know!” I said. “You know, flitting about from project to project and then getting interested in others. You need to appreciate that the 10mm figures are painted and based, so I just need to ink them a bit and put some flock on the bases. No problem.”

“So, what’s coming in the post next?” said Jane.

“Nothing!”

Actually, I had just missed out on some 10mm Gaul’s. Which was mighty lucky for me.

I had been specifically looking for 10mm figures so that I can use some of the terrain that we have from the Little Bighorn. This would help with the budgets until payday.

I also plan to use the DBA game to get some of our helpers into the swing of wargaming. With a few games of this under their belt they will have something else to talk about than just the Little Bighorn battle. The big problem is getting them used to learning the rules, so they don’t have to be led through every few weeks.

So, no doubt you will be interested to know what I actually bought.

On eBay = £38.00 in Total (£19.00 for each army)

Finished after update evaluation = £127.56

  • Roman Army of 12 bases with 58 Figures = £61.14
  • Carthaginian Army of 15 bases with 53 figures = £66.42

Here are the 10mm Carthaginians pictured below. It has 15 bases.

These figures were a real find for me as it came with a Roman Army of 12 bases as well.

The completed touch-ups

So, to make the figures fit for battle on my boards I just needed to cover them in.  Per of Roll a One fame advised that I use a nut brown ink wash to highlight the painting job and to give them a bit of shade and a bit of depth. Then I needed to add a bit of flock to make the base stand out a bit more, followed by a varnish so they are ready to face off against one and another.

Here is the Roman Hastati/Princeps base. The old base is on the right as you look at the picture and the base on the left is showing the base after the wash and the flock is added.

This is the Carthaginian Spearmen base with the old base  on the right as you look at the picture and the base on the left is showing the base after the wash and the flock is added.

And here is the Carthaginian Auxilia base with the old base is on the right as you look at the picture and the base on the left is showing the base after the wash and the flock is added.

Finally, here is the Elephant base that looks great now it has had a touch up.
