Is your collection properly insured?

05 May 2017

The Meeples & Miniatures podcast recently featured a conversation about insuring collections.

The discussion was prompted by a question set by a listener asking what the podcasters would do if their collections were destroyed in a “freak accident” and they received a “handsome” pay out from their household insurance.

However, Mike Whittaker, regular co-host and Chairman of Peterborough Wargames Club, immediately saw a flaw in the question.

“Can I raise a very important point, very early in this question?” he asked the Meeples team. “Is your household insurance going to cover your miniature collection, because I’m not sure mine is?”

It then dawned on the podcasters that they also all own many expensive and hard to replace board games that are probably not be covered by standard household insurance either.
The whole highly amusing segment of the on-line show can be enjoyed by clicking here

The section of the podcast is about 13 minutes long, but it is well worth listening to the end if only to hear Mike summarise the whole debate thus:
“What was the comment I saw? I live in mortal terror that when I die my wife will sell my collection for what I told her I paid for it.”
Of course, the serious point is that it is very likely that your household insurance does not automatically cover your whole collection.
However, by entering all the details of your collection in our Collection Calculator you can then provide your insurer with a detailed list at renewal that comes with an independent and expert estimate of its true value. You can then ask your insurer to include proper cover of your collection in your household insurance.
