Painting a WW2 German Infantry Zug (Platoon)
12 November 2025
I am going to follow the same process as I did with the British. I have glued and based some of the Zug but due to a shortage of 30mm x 30mm bases I cannot do them all.
So I have based the 2 base Kompanietrupp HQ, their 3 bases of mission assets, the 2 base Gruppen HQ and their 3 base 1st Gruppen.
First, I undercoated all of the troops in the basic colour and in this case it’s going to be Vallejo German Field Grey. Here is the HQ Kompanietrupp below with it leader base and the rifle team base.
I have done the same with the Mission Assets bases below and in this fashion I am going to do the same process with the other bases I plan to paint.
Having undercoated them I start the process of layering, adding the Nuln Oil black shading wash to all of the base figures. This will help in the next processes and will allow me to pick out the details of the figures when I paint them.
I have added black details to the boots, weapons, packs and boxes (below). I know it does not seem that different at this stage, but as I add the later layers and additional detail it will begin to show up more and more.
At this stage I have added the brown on the water bottles, weapons and some of the packs and equipment.
Now I can build up the layers, adding some silver highlight details to the figures on the rifles and equipment.
I have now moved onto painting the flesh and the basic green of the bases.
The next stage is the final washing and detailing. Here we see the Kompanietrupp.
I have now done the penultimate stage and flocked all the bases ready for the final process.
These troops are now ready to go. Having been flocked and worked with some additional base details, including a light brown tuft to make seeing the German bases easier for the players. This is done with 2mm grass tufts, 6mm grass tufts acting as bushes with of them some cut down as larger bushes. Yet again I think these troops will look great for the upcoming rules.

Should I promise now to get back to painting buildings? Probably not - but let us see where the project and blogging impulses takes me. . .
