You’re never too old to start again

03 February 2017

Today I made a big decision. Ever since my children were born I have not really been able to focus on my hobby. However, I did still manage to find a bit of time over the years (usually, late in the evenings) to write several sets of wargame rules and supplements on top of dabbling a little in the 6mm market. But the reality has always been that my main passion is collecting, painting and playing games. So, now my youngest is virtually grown up, I have decided to jump back in.

My fondest memories of Wargaming are from my 15mm days using WRG’s War Games Rules 1000BC to 500AD and eventually progressing to the DBA rules. So, imagine my confusion when after a few internet searches I chanced upon a DBA 3.0 website.  Really? DBA 3.0?

I determined to buy a set of these DBA 3.0 Rules to see what the game was about. After an evening reading them I knew that my days of Ancient 15mm Wargaming were back.

I chose the smaller of the two scales using 40mm base widths. Then it was back on to the internet again to get a playing mat. I found a fairly cheap one on Amazon that arrived the next day. The mat was 4ft by 4ft so more than enough for two 600mm x 600mm normal sized playing areas, as well as one 600mm x 1200mm Big battle DBA playing area.

For £1.85 I picked up some square shaped dowels and made two 200mm long measuring sticks. I coloured in the 40mm BW bands to create a movement stick as well as a shooting stick.

I also found my old painting tray and literally emptied out the dust from it. It had been packed away with some old Games

Workshop paints, some newer war paint pots and some inks.
As well as all of this, there were some paint brushes in reasonable condition, basing materials and glue.
I don’t need anything else, do I?
Well, some Gun Metal, Bronze and unbleached linen would be handy - so I am off to the Games Workshop for the first time in years. Wish me luck. . .
