Painting the 7th Cavalry

Here's the basic plan. US Cavalry of this period stood out in their non-regulation uniforms. Officers tended towards colorful options or copying their buckskin wearing leader. Some looked like farmers attending a market.

However, most of the troopers took to wearing a comfortable compromise, steering between a durable and serviceable uniform at an affordable cost. 

Hats: Wide Brimmed

  • Black, Tan, Grey or Wool, otherwise Straw Hat (Straw Colour) 

Overcoat: Enlisted Great Coat 

  • Sky Blue Wool (rooled up on horse 

Jacket: Fatigue Blouse  (officer may have Buckskin Coat) 

  • Dark Blue

Waist Coats: US Vest 

  • Sky Blue Kersey or Dark Blue 

Shirt: Flannel

  • Grey, Dark Blue or Civilian (checks were popular) 

Trousers: Mounted with Pale Yellow Stripe 

  • Sky Blue Kersey (Panels and patching - Grey Canvas) 

Belts & Boxes: Cartridge, Waist, Carbine Sling or Other

  • Black, Grey Canvas, Russet or White (Personal) 

Canteens: All 

  • Tan or Wool 

Holsters: All 

  • Black or Russet 

Gloves: Off White, Cream or Pale Yellow

Boots: Black or Brown

Saddle Blanket: Blue

Weapons: Brown and Steel
