Black Moon - Leader of the Miniconjou Sioux

14 September 2018

Black Moon or Wi Sapa was a headman or chief of the Minneconjou Sioux, but very little is known about him.

We know do know that around 1876-77 he led a small group of Miniconjou that had chosen to stay away from the Cheyenne River Agency.

Black Moon is also listed as a Miniconjou leader, joining the north village in the summer of 1876. After the Greasy Grass his family fled to Canada in 1877 and joined Sitting Bull. He and his family were finally killed at the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890.

We know the Miniconjou fought against Reno’s attack towards the village at the start of the battle, later on they are mentioned to have been on the East and Northeast side of Reno’s hill.

The Miniconjou or Mnikhowozu, meaning ‘Plants by the Water' are an Indian tribe of the Lakota.
