And now it's tree time

28 September 2018

There are twenty hexes of trees on two of the three battlefields we are representing. This means that at roughly three trees per hex we need sixty trees.

Some hexes may take four but we think three is enough. We purchased the N Scale flocked trees (without bases) from Amazon and cost us about £10 - so 80 trees cost about 13 pence each. The Air dried Clay cost about £2.80 from Hobbycraft and the MDF bases about 4 pence each.

Batch One – The first Forty trees

This batch took about an hour to do including taking the time to work out the process. After drying the MDF bases did not stick to the clay, so as they fell off we re-stuck them with some basic Bostick style glue. About 30 mins work. It worked a treat and they were in the box to dry hard to the base.

Batch Two – The second Forty trees

This batch took about forty-five minutes to do as we went straight into the process. Again, after drying the MDF bases came off clean and set to work before re-sticking them with the basic glue again. 30 mins later they were in the box to dry hard to the bases with the others.

All done and waiting for deployment

Undercoating

Set this up in the garden to undercoat the 7th Cavalry and the American Indians.

Decided to use an old packing box for the spraying area along with a GW bought brown spray. We used brown as the undercoat as we had a lot of horses.

Peter at baccus6mm always says: “Most horses I have seen are brown and therefore so are mine.”

We like that way of thinking.

We also thought that groups of four would be quick to do. So, we sprayed the front first, then the left side, then the rear side and then right side.

This process ensured an even spread of the paint, while ensuring all of the metal got covered. It took about an hour and a half to do all of the bases.

The 7th Cavalry and Native Americans are now all undercoated

The US Cavalry have 34 bases (12 Mounted, 12 Dismounted, 6 Command, 2 Pack Trains, 2 Limbers and 2 Gatling Guns).

The American Indians have 33 bases (27 Mixed Mounted and Foot and 7 Command bases).
