Bring forth the Expendables

24 April 2017

Having finished the Roman army I am going to begin on the Seleucid Army. With armoured cavalry, elephants and chariots to choose from I am looking forward to it. This means I am starting with the “Expendables” who were in the army to shock and disrupt the enemy line by charging into it.

The scythed chariots were used as an out-and-out attack weapon, crashing into and hopefully through the enemy battle line. The elephants did a similar job on the enemy cavalry or infantry in the main line of battle. Both committed just before the Seleucid's own infantry battle line made it attack. These two bases are going to be a paint job that is done at the same time, giving me drying time on one model while painting the other and visa versa.

Once I have painted and based these two bases the Collection Calculator says that they, as a collective, are going to be worth about £11.25

Elephants & Scythed Chariots

Two bases and lots of detail

I had to build these models as they came in pieces. That in itself was a bit of a task. I am pretty much a superglue virgin and it took me a while to get used to the technique. Anyway, I got it done in the end as the photo above shows.

The factory process put to one side for a moment, I concentrated on getting these right. As it turned out, this becamea labour of love. Paint one and put aside to dry, paint the other and while that’s drying go back etc etc. All day long. Again I concentrated on the overall look of the figures rather than the overdoing the details. It took me a while to get the elephants colour correct. In the end, I used a basic grey and a brownish wash rather than leaving is a straight grey colour. I have to say that painting the Seleucid Expendables has been fun and hope you like the end result.
